The IEPS tax implemented in 2014 applies to “other” hot drinks. This tax levies Mx$1.00 per litre on all sugary drinks without milk content, though this is based on the volume each package will produce when prepared as directed. Thus, powdered drinks are especially impacted by the new tax. The IEPS tax has, in part, been launched to reduce the consumption of high-calorie products that, according to the government, are majorly responsible for the high rate of both obesity and diabetes amongst the population. However, since many consumers, especially parents, rely on “other” hot drinks as a relatively inexpensive form of nutrition for their children, the category was stable. In 2015, retail volume sales grew by 1%, slightly faster than the review period CAGR.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape remained highly consolidated in 2015, with Bristol-Myers Squibb de México accounting for a 46% of retail value sales, followed by Nestlé México, with a 35% share. No other company held more than an 8% share of retail value sales. The leading companies own the strongest brands, Choco Milk (Bristol-Myers Squibb) and Nesquik (Nestlé). These brands enjoy a strong preference among children and remain top-of-mind offerings among parents. Indeed, the two leading brands are almost synonymous with chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks amongst Mexican consumers.
