Fine dining was still in demand in Sweden during 2013 and is expected to continue to benefit from demand over the forecast period. However, Swedes increased their demand for quicker and varying foodservices that still provided quality for an affordable price. With a weak economic climate in Sweden during 2013, local consumers were more careful with their spending and chose to opt for more affordable restaurants. Fine dining restaurants were more often than not half-full during 2013 and they have been forced to revaluate their offerings and restaurant layouts in order to serve and accommodate more guests.

Competitive Landscape

O’Learys Trademark AB led sales in 2013 with SEK1 billion in sales and a 2% value share of total full-service restaurants. O’Learys was just SEK19 million ahead of Harrys Pub Bar & Restaurant AB in sales during 2013, a gap which narrowed from the previous year when O’Learys overtook Harrys. From 2011, when Harrys held higher value sales, O’Learys expanded from 55 to 70 outlets up to 2013. Harrys had 46 outlets in 2013, a figure that was 40 in 2011. Both restaurants remain popular among Swedes as they act as restaurants, sports bars and regular pubs for people to meet at.

Industry Prospects

The predicted trend for full-service restaurants in Sweden is that it will have to compete more with the increased qualitative and healthy fast food restaurants that has emerged and that are expected to increase in both popularity and number of outlets. Even though Swedes are projected to increase their spending on dining out more often, the demand for fast and good food has also increased. This is to save them the time and inconvenience of having to cook themselves, but still within the same timeframe it would take them to cook in order not to see the restaurant visit as a project or activity.
