In 2015, Switzerland’s sophisticated coffee culture was reflected in the continued growth of fresh ground coffee pods. These products are the most common way of consuming coffee in Swiss homes, even outperforming fully automatic machines. Italian espresso culture is widespread, with darker roasted coffee more popular than lighter roasts. While young consumers are especially drawn to coffee pods variants, such as cappuccino and latte macchiato or coffee with aromas, they tend to eventually switch to espresso as they grow older. Moreover, single-origin coffee pods are popular among Swiss consumers who are interested in knowing where their coffee comes from. This can be seen in Migros Genossenschaftsbund eG’s limited edition Delizio Ethiopia Apricot, which it offered during summer 2015. It combined both the single origin concept with a new and exotic flavour.

Industry Prospects

With a per capita coffee consumption of 4kg, coffee is quite saturated in Switzerland. Over the forecast period consumers are therefore likely to pay more attention to single origin coffee and, with an increasing number of local roasteries, to premium specialists who are able to provide them with a better understanding of where their coffee comes from. Coffee as a lifestyle product will trigger new product launches, offering a more authentic relationship to coffee and stressing its premium ingredients.
