"Coffee in Slovakia" Published

Published: Tue Aug 11 2015

Coffee current value sales stagnated in 2014 in Slovakia in spite of total volume sales growing by 1%. Although 2014 sales were an improvement over the previous year, continued depression of value sales was caused by intensive price promotions and competitive pricing strategies of manufacturers. Consumers actively sought discounted higher-quality (premium) products over regularly priced goods. Private label products also grew in popularity in 2014, which further underlined the declining average unit price for coffee.

Competitive Landscape

Balierne Obchodu AS Poprad (Balierne Ochodu) led retail volume sales of coffee in 2014 with a share of 20%. Second-ranked Tchibo Slovensko held a 16% volume share followed by Kraft Foods Slovakia (note the company was renamed to Mondelez Slovakia during 2014) with a 13% share. From a value sales perspective Nestlé Slovensko was the leader in 2014, claiming 21% of value sales. Second and third positions were occupied by Baliarne Obchodu and Tchibo Slovensko, respectively thanks to holding 15% value shares in 2014.

Industry Prospects

Value sales of coffee are predicted to rise at a CAGR of 1% at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period, reaching an estimated market total of €249 million by the end of 2019. Coffee sales will be boosted by growing purchasing power of Slovak consumers. However, the tough competitive environment and ongoing intensive price promotions will not allow unit prices to grow over the forecast period.
