"Cheese in Iran" Published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Sat Mar 07 2015

Cheese continued to generate strong positive growth during 2014 following the positive performance recorded in the category during 2013. Consumption of packaged cheese is becoming more widespread in Iran and unpackaged cheese is becoming much less popular, even in its traditional stronghold of Iran’s remote rural areas. More sophisticated types of cheese were available in Iran during 2014, a situation which provided a welcome boost to growth in the category over the course of the year. Previously, only one type of packaged cheese was available in Iran: UF Iranian cheese, which is classified as soft cheese under Euromonitor International definitions. However, the innovation undertaken by some of Iran’s key cheese manufacturers altered this balance and gave consumers the chance to sample numerous other types of cheese such as cream cheese and processed cheese, which can be attributed to the positive growth recorded across the entire category towards the end of the review period. Overall, cheese in Iran increased in current value growth by 49% in 2014, a much better performance than the 31% current value CAGR recorded in the category over the entire review period and an indication of the strong and steady growth in the category.

Competitive Landscape

Kalleh Dairy Co assumed the leadership of cheese in Iran during 2014 as Pegah Dairy Co slid into second place. Kalleh’s success in the category towards the end of the review period was the result of major improvements in its distribution network and successful advertisement campaigns which have enabled the company to strengthen the image of its brands and products. Kalleh Dairy generated a two percentage point increase in its value share in cheese in 2014, rising to 28%, while Pegah Dairy recorded a marginal decline in its value share over the course of the year to remain on 26%.

Industry Prospects

Strong and rising demand for packaged cheese among the Iranian population will continue to boost retail sales of cheese over the forecast period. As during the review period, during the forecast period sales of cheese are set to be driven by the fact that cheese is widely consumed on a daily basis throughout Iran. Volume sales of cheese are expected to increase at a CAGR of 4% over the forecast period, while value sales are set to increase at a CAGR of 7% in constant 2014 terms.
