Smartphones were one of two key product areas in consumer electronics during the review period, alongside tablets. The key trend in overall consumer electronics during the review period was a shift from a number of specialised devices to these compact and multifunctional devices. The popularity of smartphones thus impacted many areas across consumer electronics during the review period, from imaging devices to portable players. Smartphones thus rose to account for 30% of overall retail volume in consumer electronics in 2015, up from just 11% share at the start of the review period, while overall review period sales saw a striking 29% CAGR.

Competitive Landscape

Nokia is the dominant player in feature phones, accounting for 62% retail volume share in 2015. Indeed, Nokia derived the bulk of its sales in overall mobile phones from feature phones in the year. The company gained share in feature phones steadily during the review period, due to most of its competitors shifting their focus to smartphones. However, in 2015, Nokia lost almost three percentage points in share in feature phones, due to more economy imports becoming available. With those buying feature phones focused strongly on price, many consumers traded down to these products, with "others" thus doubling share in 2015 over the previous year to reach 14% share.

Industry Prospects

Despite the soaring sales seen for smartphones during the review period, overall retail volume growth only rose by 2% CAGR due to the high household penetration of mobile phones. Growth in the review period was driven mainly by a switch from feature phones to smartphones, although there was also a further increase in the number of consumers with multiple handsets as many were tempted by new innovations. The forecast period is expected to see a general continuation of these trends, with an overall CAGR of 2%. While growth for smartphones is expected to slow due to maturity, decline for feature phones is also expected to soften, resulting in similar overall growth.
