Whilst larger phones have been available in the US through companies such as Samsung and HTC for a number of years, 2015 represented the first full year in which smartphones brand share leader Apple offered phones in the 4.7in (11.9cm) and 5.5in (13.9cm, also known as “phablets”) classifications with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. Apple’s entry to the larger phone market has helped to push momentum in the direction of these larger devices and in 2015, smartphones of 4.7 inches (11.9cm) or larger made up a staggering 84% of the US smartphones market.

Competitive Landscape

As the market for feature phones continued to contract in 2015, South Korean-based LG Electronics US appears to be the beneficiary. LG’s share of the market grew to 46% in 2015 as most other manufacturers have shifted their focus toward smartphones in the US. South Korean rival Samsung has a commanding second place position with 29% of the market by volume, giving feature phones a decidedly international dominance.
