Incontinence in 2014 was mainly under the influence of social and healthcare reforms. In a particularly unstable political environment in Bulgaria, neither incontinence products nor other sanitary accessories required by patients are supported with subsidies from the healthcare system. Whilst major reforms were planned to happen, political instability and a new government have set back any potential changes in the system. The healthcare system in Bulgaria is very unstable in terms of its finances, as well as with regards to the vested coalitional interests in play. As such any, any expectation of improvement with regards to incontinence is currently unfounded.

Palomita led in 2014 with a 14% share of value sales. Second was Torunskie Zaklady Materialow Opatrunkowych (TZMO) with 12% of value sales, followed by SCA Group with 7%. Palomita lost two percentage points in value share but remains the number one competitor in the market, mostly due to operational efficiency and manufacturing proximity. This positions the company well for a cost advantage amongst competitors. TZMO’s value share in incontinence products steadily grew over the review period and reached the second spot for the first time in 2012. These products are improving in terms of distribution and availability and offer a very good price/quality trade-off; the company’s value share rose by four percentage points in 2014. SCA Group also increased its share, by one percentage point, as it is the number one choice for premium users.
Industry Prospects
With the Bulgarian healthcare system in an extremely delicate financial and political situation it is nearly impossible to project any trends for the coming forecast period. Having in mind the establishment of a centre-right coalition government in the fall of 2014, there is little chance that incontinence will begin to be subsidised during the forecast period.
