Sales of fragrances in Denmark increased by 2% in current value terms in 2013. The increase was partly due to the rise in demand for premium fragrances. In 2013, premium fragrances posted its strongest growth rate of the review period, rising by 3% in value terms and by 5% in volume terms. Premium brands saw faster growth than mass alternatives. Danes are optimistic about their future and consequently are not as afraid of spending money as during the initial years of the economic crisis. This causes that the Danes are now more interested in more expensive brands, which the producers of premium fragrances benefit from.

Competitive Landscape

E Saether A/S continued to lead the fragrances category in 2013, recording a value share of 39%. Its brand portfolio includes a variety of major international brands, including Calvin Klein, Ck One, Marc Jacobs and Paco Rabanne, to name but a few. New to its portfolio in 2013 is the adidas brand, which it obtained from Unicare A/S. This development contributed to E Saether's increase in share from 33% in 2012 to 39% in 2013.

Industry Prospects

Euromonitor International estimates that the fragrances category is set to see value sales rise at a CAGR of 2% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period, to reach DKK1,313 million by 2018. The premium men's fragrances category is expected to post the strongest growth, at a CAGR of 3%. This will be possible as the subcategory remains relatively underdeveloped and it has consequently more scope for growth than premium women's fragrances, which also will experience a positive CAGR (1%). Danish men are increasingly opting to buy premium brands, and the premium men's fragrances category is set to benefit from this trend, with established brands set to see the strongest performance. This is because newer brands find it harder to gain a significant share in the men's fragrances categories; Danish men tend to stick to the brand/few brands they like.
