Girls’ apparel was the largest category of the total childrenswear market, holding 38% of the total childrenswear value sales in 2015. Boys’ apparel is the second largest category, accounting for 32% value share of total childrenswear, followed by baby and toddler wear with the remaining 30%.

Childrenswear is highly competitive as a result of its fashion orientation, a mix of branded and private label manufacturers as well as large and small producers, and a wide range of distribution channel networks.

Industry Prospects

There will be no major demographic changes in child population in the US over the next five years. The birth rate is set to slightly fall from 12.4 births per 1,000 in 2015 to 12.3 in 2020. Despite the slight drop in birth rate, the actual number of births is expected to increase to 4.1 million live births in 2020, 3% more than in 2015. The population aged 0-3 is expected to represent 16.1 billion or 5% of total population in 2020, whilst the population aged 4-14 is expected to decline to 44.9 billion or 13% of total population in the same period.
