In 2015, one of the most important factors impacting mixed retailers was the liquidation of Retail Adventure Pty Ltd. Although the company went into voluntary administration in 2012, it continued to operate through the variety store Crazy Clark's and the mass merchandiser Sam's Warehouse until 2014, when it was placed into liquidation. As result, 180 outlets were closed (56 Sam's Warehouse and 124 Crazy Clark's) impacting the overall performance of mixed retailers.

Competitive Landscape

In 2015, Wesfarmers Ltd continued to lead mixed retailers with a 37% value share. The company continued to strengthen its position under its brands Kmart and Target, ranked first and third in mixed retailers. During the year, Kmart was the best performer, with its value share increasing from 20% to 21%. The company benefited from improvements across several processes including procurement, supply chain and distribution, which resulted in higher efficiencies. In addition, the frugality trend also had a positive impact on Kmart’s performance, with customers buying products that traditionally they would only purchase from specialised stores at higher prices. Kmart responded to this demand through its in-house design team.
