Yet, strong consumption habits preserved it as the most optimal soft drink product for large celebrations in Uzbekistan. This continued to drive sales of carbonates in 2013.
Competitive Landscape
The competitive landscape in carbonates continued to change due to new launches, in particular the actions of Pepsi represented by Tashkent International Beverages. The start of domestic production of Pepsi and Mirinda enabled the brands to take shares from Coca-Cola and Fanta. In this changing environment, Coca-Cola led retail sales with a 33% off-trade volume share, due to the strong popularity and exceptional quality of its Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite brands. Tashkent International Beverages held second place, accounting for a 28% retail volume share. The company gained an additional three percentage points in 2013, the highest in the category, due to the positive image of its Pepsi brands and strong demand due to the long-term dissatisfaction with the very high prices of imports. Arktika Bottlers followed in third place with a 14% share of volume sales due to the competitive prices of its brands, as well as the introduction of smaller bottles.
Carbonates has fully adapted to the changing environment in soft drinks, being ready for greater challenges from bottled water, juice and RTD tea. By introducing on-the-go pack sizes, increasing the volume of its advertising and launching new flavours, producers of carbonates maintained competition in the category. Consumers’ consumption habits are not expected to change over the forecast period, which, together with the continuing population growth, is expected to contribute to strong consumer potential in the long term.
