This is a strong trend, especially in the most urbanised cities in the country. During 2013 this trend saw strong growth. While takeaway orders accounted for only 1% of overall value in the year, current value takeaway sales saw striking growth of 29% from 2012. Takeaway sales are benefiting from a growing volume of traffic and longer commutes, with less time available to dine outside of the home or prepare lengthy meals.
Competitive Landscape
Wal-Mart de México leads full-service restaurants and accounted for almost 2% overall value share and 15% chained value share in 2013. The company benefits from operating a large number of VIPs and El Porton outlets across the country. Alsea announced the purchase of these and other smaller Wal-Mart brands in 2013 but this purchase had not been fully authorised by Mexican authorities at the end of the year.
Asian cuisine is expected to remain a strong trend in Mexican full-service restaurants over the forecast period, with brands likely to emerge within Asian FSR. Mexicans are attracted to Asian cuisine for many reasons, viewing it as offering healthy yet tasty food with a low fat content and a high content of protein and vegetables. Asian FSR is also starting to see the emergence of new cuisines and types of dishes, expanding beyond a more established sushi offering. This trend is expected to continue over the forecast period, with new dishes emerging and attracting consumers. European cuisine is also traditionally popular among Mexican consumers. If operators continue to expand outlet volume in European FSR, this channel is also expected to continue to see increasing value sales over the forecast period, albeit at a lower rate in comparison to Asian FSR.
