Hettich International will award its sixth biennial International Design Awards at Interzum 2007 in Cologne, Germany, this spring. For the first time, the design competition is co-sponsored by global playing polymer processors Rehau, and this year’s competition has the largest number of participants to date.

The International Design Award will go to the best furniture design from 1,330 entries from 38 countries, including the United States, China, Germany, Japan, Poland, India and Czech Republic. Participants will submit designs for furniture and fittings. The furniture will focus on the home of tomorrow, while participants in the furniture fittings category will focus on the aesthetic impact of hinges, drawers, tambour door systems, edgeband materials, handles and the technical function of fittings. Awards will be presented at Interzum, May 9 through 12.

In the previous record-setting year, 1,153 registrations were received from 24 countries. Professors and lecturers from universities and colleges with furniture construction, furniture design and furniture-making programs were invited to submit the designs of their students, with no more than five designs per teacher. Germany, Japan and China presented the most design entries, and 22 entries were received from U.S. schools, including Rockingham Community College in North Carolina, Rhode Island School of Design, Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., North Carolina State University, Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Ind., and The Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Entries will be judged by an autonomous panel of judges made up of designers and development managers from world-class furniture manufacturers as well as independent university and/or college lecturers. A total of 20,000 euros will be awarded to winners in the first through seventh places in each category.
The first-place prize winner in the furniture category will receive 5,000 euros while the first-place recipient in the furniture fittings category will receive 3,000 euros.
