CARE House of Oakland County, Michigan, has been awarded a $10,000 grant by The Rite Aid Foundation for the Healthy Start/Healthy Families Oakland program. CARE House and three other agencies are part of a collaborative led by St. Joseph Mercy Hospital that works with families in Oakland County considered at risk. The money will support the cost of providing quality home visiting services to at-risk Pontiac-area families with infants and young children.

Trained home visitors use a research-based parenting curriculum designed to improve the health and development of at-risk young children and provide long-term (possibly as long as three to five years), weekly home visiting services. The home visitors work with families to resolve child care issues, serve as mentors, and help them with goal setting, crisis management, family stability and planning for the future. Families in the program benefit because of the promotion of health and child development, strengthened parent-child relationships and increased family stability.

Statistics from a study called Right Start in Michigan (Kids Count) reveal that the health and well being of infants and mothers in Pontiac were below that of others in Oakland County and Michigan. Healthy Start program is serving this target population, most of them single parents living in poverty; many with a less than a 12th grade education; many are teens; and a quarter of them received late or no prenatal care.

Patricia Rosen, executive director of CARE House, says, “Because of the generosity and community awareness of The Rite Aid Foundation, it means we are better able to reach these families early, assist them with parenting skills and link them to available health care providers and insurance.”
