In Mexico, 60% of people who attend an ophthalmologist have symptoms of dry eye, and confirm that they use an electronic device for more than six hours without a break, according to Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). Despite the fact that there are not enough official statistics about how many people are really affected, it is estimated that growth rates increase by 50% every year, mainly amongst the young working population. Women are more vulnerable to this problem due to hormonal changes; 40% of the female population is affected, versus 25% of the male population.

Competitive Landscape

In 2014, two leading companies dominated eye care with a combined 62% share of value sales. Alcon Laboratorios led with a 32% value share, followed by Laboratorios Sophia with a 30% value share. Both companies own brands with a long-standing presence in the Mexican market, which are well-recognised and preferred by consumers, such as Solutina (allergy and standard eye care) and Nazil Ofteno (allergy eye care), respectively.

Over the forecast period eye care is expected to see a value CAGR of 3% at constant 2014 prices, to reach MXN611 million in 2019.
