New Food research report from Euromonitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

[USPRwire, Tue Aug 11 2015] Towards the end of the review period, high unemployment rates and falling levels of income in Portugal, combined with the first signs of a slight economic recovery led many Portuguese people to start their own business in order to create self-employment opportunities. This led to an increase in the number of operators in street stalls/kiosks during 2014 as this is a consumer foodservice channel in which entry requires only low levels of investment. Moreover, the rate of outlet closures in the channel also decreased towards the end of the review period as virtually all players which were unable to resist the negative influence of the economic crisis had already closed. Predictions for the success of any new operations in foodservice are not yet very hopeful, although this fact does not seem to have discouraged newcomers, especially as far as new street stalls/kiosks are concerned, as the costs involved in establishing a business in this channel are very low.

Competitive Landscape

Chained players remained marginal in street stalls/kiosks at the end of the review period, with the channel clearly dominated by independent players, which accounted for 97% of outlets and 84% of value sales in 2014. Chained operators, which generally also own well-established coffee brands in Portugal, started to develop their kiosk outlet networks in order to sell their coffee products in strategic locations such as shopping centres and busy travel locations. The leading chained player at NBO level in 2014 was Nabeirorest with a 24% value share in chained street stalls/kiosks in 2014 thanks to its 28 Delta Qiosques outlets. Nevertheless, in terms of brands, the leading name in the channel at the end of the review period was Sical, which achieved a 27% value share thanks to its 32 franchisees. Sical Quiosques outlets are present in shopping centres and public transport stations, including metro and train stations, mainly in Lisbon and Porto. However, high rents and the fast-growing appeal of high streets as retail locations over shopping centres in the wake of the recent economic turmoil, have had a negative effect on the expansion plans of most chained operators in street stalls/kiosks.

Industry Prospects

During the forecast period, street stalls/kiosks is likely to continue being favoured by consumers who increasingly appreciate informal and convenient consumer foodservice options as well as traditional and indulgent food. Moreover, the Portuguese economy is expected to show some signs of recovery over the forecast period, although this recovery is likely to be slow and fragile in nature. As a result, these outlets are likely to remain a very good alternative to full-service restaurants because of their lower unit prices.
