Coffee is a popular drink among a limited consumer group: urban dwellers, office workers and high-income families. Coffee is overshadowed by tea, the most traditional hot drink, and its sales are hindered by high prices. Such high prices additionally pose an obstacle to the development of fresh coffee, and mean that demand is limited to instant coffee only. The absence of any cultural and historical precedent of drinking fresh coffee makes it a luxury ??" but unnecessary ??" hot drink in Uzbekistan.

Competitive Landscape

Coffee is not richly populated by brands in Uzbekistan. Consumers tend to buy two major brands which became traditional for them: Nescafé by Nestlé Uzbekistan LLC held 38% of retail value sales, with 16% of retail value sales held by Jacobs of Mondelez International Inc. Nescafé’s leadership is as a result of being a pioneer in coffee which helped to position it as the most common (nominal) coffee brand for Uzbekistani consumers. It continues offering attractive and competitive prices which helped it retain consumers over a long period. Jacobs achieved its position thanks to continuous marketing campaigns over the review period, accompanied by a strong distribution system.

Industry Prospects

Volume sales of coffee are expected to remain stable and positive, but low, based on the fact that no dramatic changes are expected in consumer drinking habits and preferences. Prices for coffee overall will remain high and unaffordable for the majority of consumers, despite a 6% decrease of unit price by 2019 at constant 2014 prices. Sales of fresh coffee may become slightly more active, however overall sales will remain negligible as consumption is limited to a small number of high-income families.
