2013 saw the same trends in coffee as previous years, namely coffee beans and coffee pods seeing an increase in volume sales at the expense of standard fresh ground coffee. Those moving away from standard fresh ground coffee towards other types can be split into two groups. One group of consumers sought greater convenience and thus opted to use coffee pod machines at home and buy coffee-to-go when outside the home. The second group of consumers sought higher quality coffee and thus opted for coffee beans to use with espresso machines, instead of using filter machines.
Competitive Landscape
Mondelez Deutschland GmbH ranked first in coffee in 2013 in retail value terms. As a result of intense competition and the penetration of new products, the company has seen its share decline slightly since 2008 but continues to prevail over other players in the category. The company's main competitors in standard fresh ground coffee are a group of domestic players, namely Tchibo GmbH, Melitta Kaffee GmbH, Alois Dallmayr oHG and the discounter Aldi. In coffee pods, Mondelez's main competitor is Nestle, which has a strong presence through its hard coffee pod systems Nespresso and Dolce Gusto. With the launch of Jacobs Momente capsules, which are compatible with Nespresso machines, the company is able to directly compete with Nestle in coffee pods.

Industry Prospects
Demand for coffee products that are fast and quick to prepare is predicted to remain high over the forecast period. Tight work schedules and a relatively low unemployment rate mean that most Germans have a regular income but little spare time. This acts as a strong incentive to buy convenient products, particularly because the desire of working Germans to engage in many activities in their spare time is high, and time-saving products are needed. Products which allow for quick consumption and easy preparation are thus expected to be the best performers over the forecast period. Convenient products like coffee pods and x-in-1 instant coffee typically carry high unit prices, which is why coffee is anticipated a positive value CAGR at constant 2013 prices over 2013-2018. In volume terms, however, a moderate CAGR decline is predicted.
