Distell Group continued to innovate within its Savanna brand in order to stimulate consumers’ interest in the cider category in 2014. Whilst Savanna and Savanna Light have long been available in 330ml clear glass bottles, Distell Group introduced a bigger 500ml glass bottle for its Savanna brand in June 2012. In May 2013 the brand introduced a 330ml metal beverage can format, a first for the brand. In August 2013, Savanna Dark, available in a 330ml black glass bottle was introduced, another first for South Africa. In October 2014 the brand introduced a new limited edition, Savanna Angry Lemon. Savanna is traditionally consumed with a wedge of lemon in the neck of the bottle, and this new product contains an added twist of lemon flavour to give consumers this taste. This ensured that the brand was foremost in consumers’ minds in summer 2014.

Competitive Landscape

Distell Group continues to dominate cider/perry in South Africa, with a total volume share of 95% in 2014. Its leading brands are Hunter’s Dry, Hunters Gold and Savanna, with respective total volume shares of 30%, 28% and 18%. Up until 2012 Savanna was bigger than Hunter’s Gold. However, Hunter’s Gold overtook Savanna in 2013, and in 2014 it was significantly bigger than Savanna, due to the introduction of larger 440ml beverage cans, driving sales volumes.

Industry Prospects

It is thought that cider/perry will continue to enjoy strong growth over the forecast period, due to its wide appeal. Manufacturers utilise high advertising spend to support their leading brands, including Distell Group’s Savanna and Hunter’s Dry brands. The introduction of larger sharing pack sizes will make these products more affordable, and better able to compete with beer.
