Diversified development of cafés/bars in 2014 underpinned the category’s robust double-digit current value growth. On the one hand, the fast penetration of the Korean Wave fuelled the growth of cafés/bars with Korean origins, such as Caffebene (Shanghai Caffebene Investment Management Co Ltd), Maan Coffee and Zoo Coffee. On the other hand, specialist coffee shops with varied themes have also attracted coffee lovers, as seen with fashion-themed TagCafe from the leading apparel brand Metersbonwe in China, opened on the fifth floor of its flagship store in Shanghai, and Sculpting in Time Café operated by Joint Publishing Co Ltd, running 24 hours a day.

Competitive Landscape

Starbucks Corp continued to consolidate its leadership in cafés/bars, with a value share of 8% in 2014, up by one percentage point compared to the previous year. Starbucks accelerated its penetration into second- and third-tier cities in China over the review period, with the aim of opening 1,500 outlets by the end of 2015. It is hoping that China will become the largest market for the company outside the US. October 2014 saw the debut of Starbucks Reserve Coffees in seven stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen; this is an interactive coffee bar targeting high-end consumers that is designed to enhance their coffee experience.

Industry Prospects

The cafés/bars channel is expected to grow at a healthy CAGR of 8%, 6% and 7% in terms of value sales at constant 2014 prices, outlets and transactions respectively in the forecast period. The channel’s performance will be stimulated by the strengthening coffee-drinking culture, especially among urban dwellers. However, following years of robust growth in transactions and value sales over the review period, forecast period growth momentum is set to naturally slow down between 2014 and 2019.
