The major trend in the baby food packaging industry in Switzerland in 2012 was the increase in thin wall paper plastic containers and other plastic jars for prepared baby food. Despite the everlasting popularity of prepared baby food in glass jars, Nestle started to offer its NaturNes brand in plastic jars with resealable plastic overcaps. The jars are microwavable and can be disposed after use or cleaned and re-used for other food products. Nestle also offers dairy products such as spoonable flavoured yoghurt or desserts in thin wall paper containers in mulitpacks of four per package. Other players, such as Hipp GmbH & Co KG and Danone, also package their desserts and yoghurt in such pack types. However, the majority of prepared baby food products, such as vegetables, fruit or mixed baby mash, is still preferably packaged in glass jars with metal lug closures. Glass is odour free, taste neutral and 100% recyclable. However, it is easily breakable and slightly heavier than plastic jars.
