2015 was another year of significant instability in the economic and political landscape in Greece. What is more, seven unbroken years of economic recession are now weighing heavily on consumer behaviour, altering all aspects of shopping attitudes and changing the spending priorities for the majority of Greek consumers. Most consumers have reduced their spending on apparel in general and sales of jeans have not been unaffected by this. At the same time, the popularity of casualwear continued to increase in 2015, with jeans staying in demand as consumers appreciate smart casual items that survive changes in fashion trends.

Competitive Landscape
Zara Hellas remained the leader in jeans in 2015 with a 14% value share. Zara operates a wide network of 40 retail outlets across Greece, all of which are located in high-traffic locations such as high streets and shopping centres. Zara is a very well-known apparel brand in mass segment in both menswear and womenswear in Greece and the brand generally faces little competition in terms of rival players in the low-to-mid price platform.
Industry Prospects
Unstable economic conditions and ongoing socio-political turmoil are set to be the most important factors influencing demand and growth rates across all apparel categories for at least for the first half of the forecast period. Within this unfavourable trading climate, the behaviours of Greek consumers are unlikely to see any significant positive changes and can be expected that Greek people will continue hunting for bargains and take advantage of all opportunities to save money, while overall consumer spending is set to remain at low levels. Over the longer term, however, the socioeconomic situation in Greece is expected to improve, certainly as long as the economy stabilises. Greek consumers have already gone through several years of reductions in their spending and they are by now more than willing to start shopping for jeans once again, should the circumstances allow it.
