However, there were other factors besides the downturn behind the decline of 5% in in-car navigation retail volume sales. Most notably, this category continued to be negatively affected by the growing use of dedicated GPS smartphone apps, as well as by a general lack of innovation. Most in-car navigation systems available in Brazil are quite basic in terms of features and functionality, and therefore can easily be replaced by smartphone apps.
Competitive Landscape
GPS Center de Comércio de Eletrônicos Ltda led in-car navigation in Brazil in 2015 with a retail volume share of 21%. The company maintains a wide product portfolio within the category and is the local distributor of the Garmin brand, which is considered to a premium brand among GPS devices in the country. Empresa Brasileira de Soluções de Mobilidade Ltda is the second leading player with a volume share of 18%. In-car navigation remained relatively fragmented overall, with “others” holding a retail volume share of 23%. Much of this share was represented by cheaper imported products aimed at socioeconomic strata B and C consumers.
