Volume sales continued to slump in home video in the Netherlands during 2015. The individual performances of various different categories varied widely, however. The category that registered the fastest volume growth in 2015 was OLED TVs, which increased by 186% over the course of the year. As OLED TVs is still rather a small category, this represents growth from 1,600 units, to 4,600 units in 2015. LED TVs, meanwhile, continue to record moderate positive volume growth in 2015.

Competitive Landscape

Samsung Electronics Nederland BV was the leading player in home video in the Netherlands in 2015, with strong sales of the company’s digital TVs based on its very diverse product range including low-priced, mid-priced and high-end products. Samsung registered a one percentage point increase in its volume share in home video in 2015, while Panasonic recorded the highest volume share decline, which was the result of the company ceasing production of plasma TVs in 2013 and selling off its remaining stock of these products over the course of 2014 and 2015.

Industry Prospects

Volume sales of home video are expected to return to slightly positive ground over the forecast period thanks to the anticipated boost provided by the strong expected in sales of ultra-HD TVs and consistent demand for LCD TVs. Meanwhile, OLED TVs is set to record the most dynamic growth of any category in home video over the forecast period, rising in volume at a CAGR of 83% over the forecast period. As the average unit price in the category is expected to decline substantially in constant 2015 terms over the forecast period, diminishing the price differences between OLED TVs and LCD TVs, increasing numbers of Dutch consumers are likely to decide to purchase an OLED TV. As such, growth in the category is set to be driven by rising consumer demand for products which offer considerably better image quality than LCD TVs.
