Egypt's tourism market is recovering well from the sharp declines seen in 2011 and 2013 which followed in the wake of large political uprisings, the subsequent changes of government and decline in internal security. With visitor nu mbers returning to growth, we are seeing renewed interest from international hotel developers, and a number of new projects are coming to the market. We currently expect both inbound and outbound tourism to grow steadily over the forecast period, though we caution this growth is dependent upon the maintenance of domestic security and political stability.
Egypt is very well established as a popular tourism destination. The country offers a broad choice of attractions, ranging from the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World through to the popular beach holiday resorts of Sharm el Sheikh. As such, with visitor confidence returning, it is no surprise that tourism numbers are climbing once again. At present, we expect to see tourism arrivals grow by 3% to just under 10.2mn in 2015, with similar growth expected throughout the remainder of the forecast period. The majority of arrivals will originate from the Europe region, benefiting from a multitude of air travel connections as well as a well developed package holiday market.

The outbound travel market from Egypt is currently much smaller than the inbound travel market. In 2015 we expect to see outbound travel grow by around 4.3%, based on GDP growth and a more positive domestic economic outlook as the currency stabilises and investment returns to the country. The outbound travel market shows less diversity than inbound travel, with most of the top destinations for Egyptian travellers consisting of its regional neighbours such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Here the market benefits from affordable regional travel, and a growing range of air connections.
