"Cigars in Germany" is now available at Fast Market Research

The public smoking bans in the foodservice channel and other public places, which were imposed in 2007 and later, have completely ousted cigars from public life in Germany. Cigar and cigarillo (excluding eco-cigarillos) smoking has a long history in Germany, with some prominent people such as former chancellors Ludwig Erhard and Helmut Schmidt known as notorious cigar smokers. The smoking bans, however, are about to wipe out the memory of cigars as a form of indulgence among younger generations.

Competitive Landscape

Domestic manufacturer Dannemann led sales in 2014 thanks to its strong presence in cigarillos. Dannemann is the only company in cigars and cigarillos which held a double-digit volume share. The company’s position can primarily be attributed to its well-performing Dannemann Moods brand, which is widely recognised and available almost everywhere. The company, however, put in a rather poor performance in 2014 because many consumers favoured international brands over domestic brands.

Industry Prospects

New regulations are likely to hit cigars hard, with plummeting sales of cigarillos expected. The cigarillo category is poised to suffer a 46% volume decline over 2014/2015 and a 59% volume decline over 2015/2016. New regulations came into effect in January 2015 and classified as cigarettes all those cigarillos which have a wrapper made from reconstituted tobacco. These so-called eco-cigarillos have thus become unprofitable for manufacturers to produce because they are now subject to the same high taxation as cigarettes. Manufacturers were, however, able to tax certain amounts of these products at the end of 2014 for sale in 2015, effectively profiting from the lower taxation for a couple more months. Market experts believe that the stock of these economy cigarillos will run out in May or June 2015.
