Home Insecticides in Venezuela - New Study Released

In spite of the cases of dengue and other insect-borne diseases, such as chikungunya fever, retail volume sales of home insecticides continued to decline. All subcategories saw retail volume sales drop for a second successive year in 2015. Because of shortages of main raw materials and inputs and the insufficient allocation of foreign exchange, manufacturers and importers of home insecticides were unable to respond to increasing demand. The scarcity of insecticide coils and spray/aerosol insecticides forced consumers to resort to traditional practices, such as the placement of camphor pills in the corners of rooms to ward-off mosquitoes. Some retailers posted signs at the entrance of outlets which read “No Home Insecticides are Available”.

Competitive Landscape

SC Johnson & Son de Venezuela continued to lead home insecticides in 2015, with a 23% share of retail value sales. The company’s home insecticides target consumers across income groups in Venezuela. The manufacturer held a 79% share of retail value sales in electric insecticides through Raid and Baygon. In spray/aerosol insecticides, SC Johnson’s Baygon and Raid brands led with retail value shares of 39% and 33%, respectively, followed by Osiris’s Plagatox (15%).

Industry Prospects

Home insecticides is expected to register a 3% value CAGR at constant 2015 prices over the forecast period, supported by retail volume sales growth and unit price increases. The performance of home insecticides will continue to be influenced strongly by weather patterns, given that rainfall is the single most important determinant of the spread of pests in Venezuela. However, sales over the forecast period are expected to be limited by lower consumer purchasing power and a narrow product offer, resulting from a lack of foreign currency to import raw materials and finished products.
