People dropped off an array of documents that included check books, bank statements, school records, utility bills, credit card receipts and register receipts. Shredding services were provided by Cintas Document Management ( and ProShred Security (

BBB and participating sponsor Coastal Federal Credit Union ( distributed information to help educate consumers on ways to further protect themselves from identity theft. In addition, two event participants were randomly selected to receive a personal shredder, compliments of Black & Decker.

“We had tons of files that were up to ten years old,” said Amy and Leonard Bush of Raleigh, who were selected to receive a personal shredder. “The boxes were just taking up room in the house and we wanted to make sure to dispose of them safely since they contained social security numbers and personal information. ‘Secure Your ID’ Day came at just the right time!”
