Chemists/pharmacies continue to be mainly concentrated in the capital Bucharest, with this leaving strong room for expansion. In 2015, this channel notably saw the strongest outlet volume expansion across health and beauty specialist retailers, with an impressive increase of almost 5%. This was chiefly due to new independent outlets opening in smaller cities and towns, with entrepreneurs being keen to capitalise on rising disposable income levels and an ageing population. The leading players are however also continuing to expand, with Siepcofar for example opening 45 outlets in 2015 to reach 320 and Help Net opening an additional 25 outlets to reach 200. The latter company also invested in refitting its outlets, with this process starting in 2014 and being completed in 2015.

Competitive Landscape

Catena Management and Sensiblu are the leading players in health and beauty specialist retailers and accounted for 15% and 12% value share respectively in 2015. These players benefit from operating large and expanding store networks in chemists/pharmacies, with 515 Catena stores and 425 Sensiblu stores operating by 2015. Both players however lost value share marginally in overall health and beauty specialist retailers in the year, partly due to stronger competition from Siepcofar but also due to more independent chemists/pharmacies opening across the country.

Industry Prospects

There will be two main trends impacting health and beauty specialist retailers in the forecast period. The first will be strong expansion in smaller towns and rural areas that remained underserved during the review period. This expansion is expected to be led by independent chemists/pharmacies. The leading players are meanwhile likely to shift their focus to larger outlets in cities offering a wider range of products, in response to consumers buying a widening range of beauty and personal care. As a result, there is expected to be a strong 10% growth in average selling space per outlet in the forecast period, with growth being particularly strong for beauty specialist retailers and chemists/pharmacies at 13% each.
