Very different questions were recorded in the various different health and beauty specialist retailers categories in 2015. The best performance was recorded for chemists/pharmacies, which increased in current value by 4%, closely followed by optical goods stores with 3% current value growth. Each of these two categories continues to benefit from demographic changes among the Finnish population, specifically the ageing of the country’s population, which is boosting demand for both of these categories. Contrary to this trend, sales of beauty specialist retailers fell by 5% in current value terms in 2015, while other health and beauty specialist retailer sales fell by 1% in current value. These categories were both negatively affected by the bleak economic situation in Finland. Beauty specialist category, in particular, was adversely affected by low demand as more Finns opted to buy standard beauty and personal care products through grocery retailers channels. Faced with lower levels of disposable income, many Finnish consumers are now looking for new ways to penny-pinch and this is clearly evident in lower demand for beauty specialist retailers. Due to this lack of demand, two key players divested from the category towards the end of the review period; Stockmann Beauty exited the category in 2014, while Yves Rocher heavily reduced the number of outlets it operates in Finland throughout 2014 and 2015.

Competitive Landscape

During 2015, health and beauty specialist retailers was led by the Yta chemists/pharmacies chain with a value share of 14%. Yta is a cooperative of chemists/pharmacies with a primary presence in rural areas of Finland. The cooperative does not operate a common store brand and member retailers carry their individual and independent names, although they cooperate on purchasing and marketing. Over the review period, Yta pursued an aggressive expansion strategy, increasing the number of outlets every year. However, this expansion came to an end in 2014 and the cooperative’s value share in health and beauty specialist retailers stagnated in 2015. Yliopiston Apteekki Oy, the more, remained the only branded chemists/pharmacies chain in Finland at the end of the review period, securing an 11% current value share in chemists/pharmacies and a 9% value share in health and beauty specialist retailers in 2015.
