Grocery retailers grew by 3% in current value terms in 2013, slightly up on the growth of the previous year. The cautious economic recovery encouraged some consumers to increase their spending on groceries, which helped boost sales over the previous year. However, the number of grocery retailers declined slightly in 2013, which held growth rates back. While channels that are typically cheaper, such as hypermarkets and discounters, saw the number of stores increase, many smaller outlets, such as convenience stores, had to close due to the lingering effects of the uncertain economic environment as well as strong price competition from larger outlets and discounters.

Competitive Landscape

ICA Sverige (37%), Axfood (16%) and Coop Sverige (14%) were the leading players in grocery retailing in 2013. ICA Sverige is the clear leader due, amongst other things, to its long-established presence in Sweden, an extensive retail outlet network, and the fact that the company's private label product ICA, with various extensions, such as ICA Basic. ICA Glutenfri, ICA Election, among others, are well-known and respected amongst Swedes. ICA is present in convenience stores (ICA Nara, ICA To Go), supermarkets (ICA Supermarket, ICA Kvantum) and hypermarkets (Maxi ICA Stormarknad).

Industry Prospects

In the short term price-sensitive consumers and the sluggish economic forecast will mean that grocery retailers will experience a rather flat constant value development. However, as the period progresses, sales are predicted to accelerate slightly and then fall back marginally towards 2018. Price competition from discounters and hypermarkets will also contribute to keeping constant value growth at rather modest levels.
