EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) Market by Application (Automotive, Building & Construction, Tires & Tubes, Wires & Cables and Lubricant Additives) and Geography - Trends & Forecasts to 2019

The report on EPDM captures its global market size by volume and value. The market for EPDM is growing at a brisk pace in emerging markets. The demand for EPDM is driven by the end-user industries such as automotive, building & construction, electronics, and plastic modification.

Demand dynamics from the end use industry and manufacturing technology up gradation are the two major factors that are expected to shape the demand for EPDM in near future. The global automotive industry is a major consumer of EPDM. Thus it is imperative that the demand for EPDM will be significantly influenced by its consumption towards automotive applications. EPDM, owing to its physical properties, has a number of applications in the automotive industry such as weather-stripping & seals, glass-run channel, radiator, tubing, belts, electrical insulation, plastic impact modification to be used in bumpers and hoods, thermoplastic vulcanisates and motor oil additives. It is because of these properties that today, modified EPDM plastics are replacing PVC and other materials that were used in automotive interiors; increasing its global consumption. The EPDM market in emerging markets such as Brazil, Mexico along with China and India are expected to grow with a relatively higher CAGR for the next five years.

Companies around the world are investing capital in order to achieve a higher EPDM manufacturing efficiency. Lanxess AG (Germany) is among the front runners in this arena. The company has developed a new technology called the Keltan ACE process to produce EPDM. Compared with conventional production processes, Keltan ACE technology reduces energy requirements for rubber production and it does not require catalyst extraction as a result of high catalyst efficiency. Furthermore, the process enables the manufacture of new EPDM rubber grades. LANXESS AG has also developed the Keltan Eco grade of EPDM, which is manufactured using raw materials extracted from sugarcane waste that in turn is a renewable resource; thus making it more eco-friendly. This market has yet to be tapped fully and holds huge promise as most industries are focusing on green technology and energy saving process currently.
