Home and Garden Specialist Retailers in Ukraine - New Report Available

Ukrainians spent UAH48.8 billion (excluding sales tax) at home and garden specialist retailers which is more positive than expected but still a huge drop compared to the historic CAGR of 8% at current prices. Lower consumer spending power, a result of the strong local currency devaluation in 2014 and 2015 combined with the worsening consumer expectations caused by the military conflict in eastern Ukraine, made it impossible for most consumers to afford all products and services they wanted or needed. Repairing and changing furniture became a luxury with many low-income consumers, and they either had to postpone such investments or switch to cheaper products, thus driving value sales down overall in spite of the growth in prices.

Competitive Landscape

Epicentre K was the biggest contributor to home and garden specialist retailers retail value sales, accounting for a 41% share in 2015. With the Nova Liniya (owned since 2013), it had even stronger positions in the channel and could effectively compete with smaller operators through lower prices and much wider assortments. Big formats of stores comparable with hypermarkets practiced within the Epicentre chain allow for the strategy and contracts made directly with manufacturers rather than involving more costly intermediaries. The operational mode turned out highly competitive in 2015, too, with the company posting the biggest gain in sales over the year in spite of the ceased expansion.

Industry Prospects

Future dynamics of home and garden specialist retailers will be tightly concomitant with the speed of economic recovery in the country. Such products (excluding ones for private gardens ??" seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, etc) do not bear a high necessity products status, can serve for a long time (eg furniture) and thus will be postponed for replacement until better times. Whilst the domestic economy and hence consumer incomes are forecast to be in the best shape by the end of the forecast period, so is the channel dynamics anticipated to have the smallest growth rates demonstrated in 2016 and 2017 to further speed up and translate into the overall 17% increase at constant prices between 2015 and 2020. In line with the economic improvement, home and garden specialist retailers will be upgrading their assortments with a bigger share of standard and premium brands to suit shifting consumer preferences.
