The FAN5355 Offers Industry’s Highest Efficiency for Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) Applications

The judging panel selected Fairchild’s FAN5355, a digitally programmable buck converter that offers the industry’s highest efficiency for Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) applications, using strict selection criteria. Awarded products had to demonstrate innovative design, significant advancement in technology or its application, and a substantial achievement in price and performance. Awards are designed to encourage the application of power supply technologies in China. Last year, Fairchild’s FDMF8700, a fully-optimized, integrated 12V driver plus MOSFET power-stage solution, won the same award. In 2006, Fairchild’s 30V synchronous buck converter chip sets, the FDS6298 and FDS6299S, received the award.

The FAN5355 is an 800mA/1000mA 3MHz buck converter, designed with a proprietary ultra-fast architecture that consumes very low quiescent current and yet delivers ultra-fast transient response. Typical quiescent current in PFM mode is 37µA and even with this meager standby current, the FAN5355 is able to provide best-in-class transient response, making the application more resilient to unexpected fluctuations in load. In addition, careful optimization of the architecture and drive train provides outstanding efficiency at both light and heavy loads.

Fairchild’s FAN5355 is equipped with an I2C interface that allows system design engineers to dynamically adjust the digital core's power supply voltage based on the processor workload. Typical cores that can benefit from DVS are application processors, graphics processors, and DSPs in mobile applications. By tailoring the power supply voltage level to the processing state of the core, energy consumption is reduced, leading to longer battery life. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the DVS, the FAN5355’s digitally programmable output voltage has a range of 0.75V to 1.975V and can be adjusted in 12.5mV increments. In addition, the 3MHz switching frequency allows the use of small passives, which provide relief to system design engineers who are constantly striving for smaller and smaller footprints. Adding to this space-savings, the product is offered in compact WL-CSP packaging.

Due to very short development cycles of portable systems in China, it is difficult for the power management unit (PMU) to keep up with the changes, additions and enhancements that system designers incorporate. The FAN5355 plays an important role because it complements the PMU and fills in this gap.
