Bahrain Autos Report Q2 2015 - New Market Research Report

New vehicle sales remain strong in Bahrain, although they have eased slightly, from 22% annual growth over H114, to 17% annual growth over 8M14. This still takes year-to-date sales to the 42,266 unit mark. For the full-year, BMI is maintaining its view of sales growth in the region of 14.5%, taking full-year new vehicle sales to the 63,300 mark.

Although we believe that passenger cars will continue to account for the lion's share of new vehicle sales within Bahrain, the news in November 2014 that German commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck and Bus has been awarded a contract to supply 127 new buses to Bahrain's Ministry of Transport is a reminder of the opportunities that also exist within Bahrain's commercial vehicle segment.

The contract was awarded to MAN as part of the Kingdom's plan to enhance its public transport network from 2015 onward. As the country already ranks highly among its GCC peers in BMI's Logistics Risk Index for both the Quality of Transport and Extent of Transport categories, we believe that successfully implementing the project will keep Bahrain outperforming for the foreseeable future.

MAN will supply 88 Midi buses and 39 city buses through local distributor AMA Motors, which will also benefit from the project by continuing to provide training, parts and maintenance after the buses have entered service. As well as being used around the city, the buses will be used for airport transfers, tying in with another government project to modernise Bahrain International Airport. This falls under the government's BHD8.29bn (USD22bn) fund to be spent on infrastructure projects over the next four years, as announced by the Minister of Transport and acting CEO of Bahrain's Economic Development Board, Kamal bin Ahmed in October.
