Theravance leverages Multivalent Design to install useful molecular features, such as high potency, high selectivity, duration of action, and activity at a second biological target to create novel and highly differentiated medicines. Examples of drugs and candidates in Development created by the use of Multivalent Design include the following: VIBATIVTM (telavancin) an antibiotic with two complementary pharmacologies approved in 2009 for the treatment of adult patients with complicated skin and skin structure infections; TD-1792, a second antibiotic with two different complementary pharmacologies that has completed a Phase 2 study in complicated skin and skin structure infections; and TD-5959, which as a single molecule acts to both agonize the 2 adrenoreceptor and antagonize the M3 muscarinic receptor, has completed Phase 2a studies in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The discovery and characterization of these compounds will be described to illustrate the utility, depth and breadth of Multivalent Design in Drug Discovery
