Microneedle Drug Delivery Systems Revenue to Double by 2012

Greystone Associates Analyzes Technology Factors, Market Drivers and Managed Care Implications

[USPRwire, Thu Dec 03 2009] Advances in materials processing - technologies that include micromachining, nanoprocessing and structured film forming - are creating new devices and new opportunities for minimally invasive medicine. These advances have led to the development and introduction of devices that employ very small needles – microneedles – that can deliver drugs or sample analyte by mechanically perforating the outer skin layer. The processing techniques incorporate one or more technologies that enable the precise machining, extrusion, casting, and/or forming of from one to an array or grid of microneedles.

Microneedle technology has the potential address the growing trend toward self-administration by allowing the precise injection of therapeutic agents to prescribed locations below the skin. Microneedles will also be a factor in continuous and remote patient monitors and point-of-care diagnostics. But before microneedles find widespread use, developers must refine the techniques for optimally inserting them into the skin, and complete the integration of microneedles into full diagnostic, monitoring or drug delivery systems.

“We expect microneedle drug delivery to reach just under $400 million globally on a drug plus device (combination product) revenue basis by 2012. In North America, growth will be driven by the anticipated approvals of Zosano’s ZP patch PTH product, based on Alza’s Macroflux, and by the anticipated approval of one or more therapeutic oncology vaccines,” explains David Clark, Greystone Associates analyst. “In Europe, the recent EC market authorization of Sanofi-Pasteur’s Intanza intradermal influenza vaccine using Becton Dickinson’s Soluvia prefillable microneedle syringe will drive growth in the region. Other important microneedle segments will be the delivery of therapeutic peptides and the administration of nucleic acids for gene therapy.”

A new research study, Microneedles in Medicine: Technology, Devices, Markets and Prospects analyzes existing and emerging microneedle delivery and diagnostic products, market participants, and key demand and technology factors influencing the commercial market and shaping growth in this sector.
