[USPRwire, Sat Jan 16 2010] Highlights:
• Bob Boone, Scott Palmer and other special guests from the Philadelphia Phillies are coming together for an afternoon of “shear madness” as they shave their heads and sign autographs to raise funds for The Tug McGraw Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that addresses the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual impact of neuroscience conditions.
• These special guests will be raising money to accelerate new treatments and cures to improve quality of life for children and adults affected by debilitating neuroscience conditions such as brain cancer, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
• Sponsor one of their haircuts, or consider forming your own team and securing pledges for your team members to get a “shear” or “cut”.
• To set up your own fundraising page, contact Genvieve Goldstein at genvieve@tugmcgraw.org. Prizes will be awarded for the top fundraising team and individual.
• If you cannot join us for the event, consider making a contribution to the Shear Strength Team at www.active.com/donate/shearstrength.
• Shear Strength is taking place on Saturday, February 13, 2010 from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Shady Katie's Pub and Patio, 814 South White Horse Pike, Somerdale, NJ 08083.
• During the event, admission to Shady Katie’s is free. A silent auction will include Phillies and Tim McGraw memorabilia and experiences.
• Shady Katie’s has a special interest in neuroscience conditions, specifically brain cancer. The bar is managed by Frank Cavallaro, a former New Jersey state trooper whose friend and colleague Denis McDowell succumbed to brain cancer in 2009.
Quotes:
“Tug McGraw’s legacy reaches far beyond the Phillies and we are proud to support the Tug McGraw Foundation in serving patients with brain cancer, traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder,” said Scott Palmer, Director of Public Affairs for the Philadelphia Phillies. “Shear Strength is an exciting and fun opportunity to raise awareness and funds that will contribute to improving quality of life for these patients.”
“In the same way Tug was a rallying force for the Phillies, his Foundation serves and inspires thousands of patients who are diagnosed each year with neuroscience conditions such as brain cancer, traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder,” said Bob Boone, former Major League All-Star and member of the 1980 World Series-winning Philadelphia Phillies. “It’s an honor to participate in Shear Strength to support those efforts.”
“Brain cancer has impacted those of us at Shady Katie’s through the loss of our friend and former colleague, Denis McDowell, who succumbed to brain cancer last year,” said Frank Cavallaro, manager of Shady Katie’s. “We are happy to do anything we can to help raise money to improve the quality of life for patients with neuroscience conditions.”

About The Tug McGraw Foundation
The Tug McGraw Foundation was established in 2003 to enhance the quality of life of children and adults with brain tumors, and in 2009 expanded programs to include Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Traumatic Brain Injury, (TBI). We collaborate and partner with other organizations to accelerate new treatments and cures to improve quality of life.
About Shady Katie’s
Shady Katie’s Pub & Patio opened in 2002 and is owned and operated by the Cavallaro family. With minimal experience and very little resources to get started, we received countless contributions that have helped us build the foundation of what we have today. Our wish is to be an asset to the local business economy and to build the ties that provide us with the opportunity to give back to the community that has been so good to us. By providing a warm and welcoming family type of atmosphere, we look to build an environment that encourages all to join us for any event and leave with the desire to return on another day.
