The Secret Senator & the Death of Barak Obama’s Reform Bill
Today, Webster Brooks, Independent Vice-Presidential candidate called on the American people to demand that the U.S. Senator’s identity be revealed, who placed a secret hold on legislation to create a public Web site listing all contracts awarded by the federal government.
[USPRwire, Thu Aug 31 2006] Today, Webster Brooks, Independent Vice-Presidential candidate called on the American people to demand that the U.S. Senator’s identity be revealed, who placed a secret hold on legislation to create a public Web site listing all contracts awarded by the federal government.
Brooks said “It’s obvious that shining the light on who received $2.5 trillion of government contracts, loans and grants last year, is a clear and dangerous threat to Senators who fear accountability.”
Senate Bill 2590, sponsored by Senator Barak Obama (D-IL) and Tom Coburn (R-OK) moved through the Senate Homeland Security Committee by voice vote and seemed destined to pass, before an anonymous Senator blocked the bill by secretly objecting to its consideration. The Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2006 (S. 2590) required that a Senator publicly disclose a notice of intent to object to proceeding on any measure or matter.
Brooks observed that “In 2006, the Congress stuffed $27 billion of pork barrel projects in the Transportation Bill, without attaching their names to the appropriations. Now someone has anonymously torpedoed a bill that would reveal the Senate’s ties to special interests in awarding trillions of tax payer dollars of funds. Worse than the anonymous Senator (s) blocking S. 2590, is the complicity of the other Senators, including those who supported the bill, who allow this scandalous practice to continue.”
The secret hold on the bill does not automatically kill the legislation. Brooks stated “Whoever is blocking this bill, can simply withdraw the hold, or the Senate can change its rules. But that is not likely to happen. This is an attempt to frustrate the bill, and force Senator Obama and Coburn to re-submit it next year after the elections. ”It is a cynical ruse that undermines the principle of open government and living proof that Democrats and Republicans are more interested in protecting their privileges and lining the pockets of their friends than providing clean government.”
Speculation about which Senator or Senators secretly blocked S. 2590 is rampant in and outside the Washington beltway. Brooks concluded his remarks by pointing out the irony that the Bush Administration and Congress have bitterly complained about several high profile leaks they claimed have jeopardized national security. Brooks said, “Apparently, when it comes to transparency on the matter of how the government spends trillions of tax payers’ money, government officials have maintained a wall of silence. Perhaps it is time for someone to perform a patriotic act of leaking the identity of the secret Senator blocking this legislation in the public interest.”
