Attorney Symington Will Help Plan Commemorations for 150th Anniversary of War Between the States


[USPRwire, Mon Oct 06 2008] Stuart Symington, Jr., attorney of counsel with the law firm of Gallop, Johnson & Neuman, has been appointed by Missouri Governor Matt Blunt to serve on the Missouri Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, which will help plan public commemorations for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Governor Blunt signed an executive order this year creating the Commission to honor the bravery and sacrifices of Missourians during the Civil War. Approximately 160,000 Missourians fought during the Civil War, and 1,162 engagements were fought on Missouri soil. The Commission will serve as official liaison with other Civil War sesquicentennial commissions nationwide and make recommendations to promote public awareness and organize commemorations during the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States in 2011 through 2015.

Mr. Symington specializes in governmental law and immigration issues at Gallop, Johnson & Neuman. Previously, Mr. Symington served as vice-president and general solicitor for Union Pacific Railroad Company. He has represented clients before local, state and federal agencies and departments in Washington, D.C., throughout the United States and overseas. His practice has included representing individuals, as well as charitable, educational and religious organizations, and private and publicly-held corporations. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Yale University,

Among other pro bono affiliations, Mr. Symington is a trustee of the Supreme Court of Missouri Historical Society, secretary of the Jefferson Barracks Heritage Foundation, Inc. and former chair of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association Military Affairs Committee. He is a former civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army, chairman of the Missouri Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, and a former trustee of the Association of the United States Army. He co-edited the critically-acclaimed book “Malindy’s Freedom: The Story of a Slave Family” by Mildred Johnson and Theresa Delsoin published by The University of Missouri Press in 2005.
