Karen S. Montgomery to Seek District 14 State Senate Seat

Karen S. Montgomery, an eight-year veteran of the Maryland House of Delegates, will announce her candidacy for the State Senate seat from District 14 in Montgomery County.

[USPRwire, Sun May 16 2010] Karen S. Montgomery, an eight-year veteran of the Maryland House of Delegates, will announce her candidacy for the State Senate seat from District 14 in Montgomery County.
Del. Montgomery’s announcement will be made at a press conference at 12 noon, Monday, May 24 in the lobby of the Olney Theatre Center for the Performing Arts, 2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Rd., Olney. The venue has special significance for Del. Montgomery; in the 1990s, she chaired the theatre’s capital campaign to build the new stage and has strongly supported state funding for the theatre during her tenure in the House of Delegates.
“Residents of District 14 need a voice in the Maryland Senate who reflects their views,” says Del. Montgomery, a resident of Brookeville. “I’m experienced, energized and ready to take on the role of a full-time Senator representing my neighbors.”
Del. Montgomery has a proven track record of identifying innovative approaches to bridge differences and build a consensus among those with conflicting interests. She has fought to protect Maryland’s “first-in-the-nation” public schools from drastic budget cuts and has worked tirelessly to support seniors and people with disabilities.
Maryland families are now protected from losing their homes to foreclosure because of overwhelming hospital bills – the result of a newly enacted measure authored by Del. Montgomery and her efforts as a member of the Health and Government Operations Committee. Del. Montgomery and the committee also expanded access to contracts with state government agencies for small, minority-owned business owners and improved the availability of health care.
As a member of the Governor’s Commission to Protect the Chesapeake Bay, she offered common-sense environmental solutions to maintain our critical natural resources, including requiring cars to be more fuel-efficient and reducing the amount of nitrogen pollution entering the Bay.
Del. Montgomery has been a local educator at the elementary, middle school and university levels. She is a proud mother and grandmother and resides in Brookeville with her husband, Harry.
