Democrat Ad Depicting Illegal Immigrants As Terrorists is More Politics As Usual
Today, Webster Brooks, Vice-Presidential candidate on the Imperato for President 2008 Independent ticket, called the Democratic Party’s ad equating illegal immigrants crossing the border with the actions of terrorists, inflammatory and offensive.
[USPRwire, Tue Aug 29 2006] Brooks said “This ad depicting illegal immigrants climbing a fence on the Mexican border, then flashing images of Osama bin Laden and terrorists carrying bazookas is an outrage. It shows Democrats will resort to any device to win votes.”
The ad was pulled off the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee after Hispanic groups complained the ads were anti-immigrant. The ad opened with the caption "Security Under Bush and GOP.” While showing illegal immigrants scaling fences, the words “Millions More Illegal Immigrants’ flashed across the screen. After shots of Osama bin Laden and masked terrorists standing on smoking rubble, the ad ends with the question “Feel Safer? Then an appeal is made to “Vote for Change”? ??
Brooks stated “This ad shows nothing has changed with the Democrats and Republicans. They squabbled and did nothing on immigration reform for months.”
“Now the Democrats attempt to capitalize on America’s anxiety about national security and terrorism, running these kinds of ads to snub the Bush administration. It’s amazing they would stoop so low, and borrow a page out of the old Republican playbook that used racial wedge issues to gin up their base vote. After all, it was Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean that said Republicans would use illegal immigrants as a ‘scapegoat’ in the 2006 elections. One has to wonder if the Latino community did not complain, if these ads would still be running today.” ??
The Imperato-Brooks 2008 campaign has advanced a comprehensive plan to address the issues of reforming illegal and legal immigration called the “2010 One America Plan.” Brooks also said Democrats and Republicans have been weak and irresponsible on issues of national security and border security.
“I suspect both parties will run lots of scripted Madison Avenue ads on immigration reform and national security during the fall elections. Perhaps that’s all they can do to try to obscure the reality that America has no immigration reform policy, and many American’s do not feel our national security has been enhanced.”
