Recently published research from Euromonitor International, "Tea in Slovenia", is now available at Fast Market Research

[USPRwire, Sat Mar 14 2015] Despite the ongoing economic crisis in Slovenia, high unemployment and decreasing private expenditure, demand for tea showed slight growth during the review period, and sales increased by 2% in value terms in 2014. This stemmed from the relatively low price of tea in comparison with other drinks. Furthermore, the increasing demand for tea in Slovenia is attributable to its healthy image and growing health concerns among Slovenians. However, growth is limited to the off-trade channel where there are much lower unit prices. Tea is a traditional beverage in Slovenia and mostly consumed during the cold winter months or when ill; most Slovenians are not regular tea drinkers due to the strong coffee culture. Therefore the most activity in 2014 in terms of flavour innovation and marketing support was in fruit/herbal tea and herbal/traditional medicinal tea, which are driving overall sales. However, on account of its richness in antioxidants and other beneficial attributes as well as much positive publicity in the media, green tea is enjoying increasing demand and represents significant sales in Slovenia.

Competitive Landscape

In Slovenia, tea is dominated by domestic manufacturer Žito Food industry dd and its brand 1001 Cvet, which has, through its long-term presence, managed to establish good recognition and a wide distribution network. Žito’s leading position also stems from its wide product portfolio and strong presence in the biggest three categories, herbal/traditional medicinal tea, fruit/herbal tea and green tea. The company managed to achieve a 52% value share in 2014.

Industry Prospects

As tea in Slovenia is still mainly considered as a beverage meant for consumption in cold winter months, manufacturers are expected to continue their efforts to improve its sales during the rest of the year. Therefore the promotion of other tea, such as white tea or rooibos tea, as a healthy everyday beverage, or the introduction of fruit/herbal tea products that are to be prepared with cold water, is expected to continue. Fruit/herbal tea, due to its long tradition in Slovenia, is set to remain the most prevalent tea type in the forecast period.
