[USPRwire, Sat Mar 14 2015] Breakfast cereals in Uruguay, with the exception of hot cereals (oatmeal), are consumed almost exclusively in mid- to high-income households and despite the efforts from the Ministerio de Salud Pública and some manufacturers, the breakfasting habits of Uruguayans have not been significantly modified in many decades. Most consumers, and especially those with low-income levels, continue to opt for a fast coffee with milk and the traditional “bizcochos” or a variation that may involve tea or mate instead of coffee and other baked products or biscuits replacing the artisanal pastries. Without the inclusion of low-income consumers, breakfast cereals volume growth rates continue falling and failing to take off.
Nestlé del Uruguay SA will continue leading retail value sales of breakfast cereals in 2014, and maintain an 18% share in 2014. Not far behind, four companies are competing for second place: domestic Silcom SA with its La Abundancia cereals (14% projected share), Plucky SA, one of the companies from Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV (13%), Fortylex SA with its Kellogg’s brand products (12%), and Promol Ltda (11%) with its Granix and Frutigran brands.
Industry Prospects
It is not expected that the breakfasting habits of Uruguayan consumers will change over the forecast period, or that there will be large numbers of consumers adopting breakfast cereals. Therefore volume growth may be derived from a possible increase in the number of consumers within the original target group (those with mid- and high-income levels) making the switch, but even if this happened it is not foreseen to be significant.
