Jina Bacarr, author of The Blonde Geisha and Naughty Paris (July 2007) talks about her unusual Christmas tree and how it turned into a one-act play.
[USPRwire, Sat Dec 23 2006] "Decorating a tree for Christmas is a wonderful Holiday tradition," says Jina Bacarr, video podcaster for "Romancing The O.C., "but at my house we have a Christmas Piano Tree."
It all started years ago when she was a little girl. Her family moved around the country for her dad's work in aerospace, so they often found themselves in a new town right before Christmas. Sometimes they didn't get a tree until late Christmas Eve but according to Jina, her mom would stay up late and decorate the tree so they'd have it for Christmas morning. On Christmas Day, her mother played the piano while the family sang Christmas Carols around the tree.
When her mom passed away a few days before Christmas several years ago, Jina recalls how she didn't have the heart to decorate a Christmas tree. Then she remembered how much her mother loved her piano.
"Why not decorate our piano for the holidays?" Jina says. "After all, a piano is out of wood and that wood was once a tree, so why not a Christmas Piano Tree?"
It's not as strange as it sounds. Though Christmas trees started in Germany in the sixteenth century when villagers brought decorated trees into their homes, some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce.
Now Jina decorates their old piano every Christmas. "I made a podcast video of my holiday tradition along with a second video of my one-act play, 'The Christmas Piano Tree,' which was produced at the Malibu Stage Company Theatre in Malibu, CA. My play is the story of a lonely widow who loses her faith and rediscovers it through the magic of an old piano and a girl with pink hair."
