Over 1000 Runners Hit the Streets of El Segundo

El Segundo PTAs’ 15th Annual 5K Run for Education and Kids’ Fun Run set for Saturday, March 24, 2007

[USPRwire, Tue Mar 06 2007] El Segundo PTAs’ 15th Annual 5K Run for Education and Kids’ Fun Run will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, March 24, 2007 in the streets of El Segundo. The 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:00 a.m. and the Kids’ Fun Run starts at its conclusion, approximately 9:15 a.m.

The PTA’s Run for Education and the Kids’ Fun Run are expected to draw over 1,000 runners and walkers from around the South Bay. The event is the PTAs’ major fundraiser each year, providing extra funding for El Segundo’s public schools. “This year’s Run promises to be better than ever and now features on-line registration,” said Jeanne Peters, Race Director for the El Segundo Council of PTAs. “The Run will serve as a centerpiece for the School District’s new Wellness policy while providing an excellent opportunity to promote multi-generational heath and fitness throughout our community.”

Peters expressed her gratitude to members of the Run Committee and the many local business owners and community members who have signed up to sponsor the event or volunteer on race day. “The PTAs is thankful for the superb support from Chevron, our key sponsor, Continental Development and many other Businesses who have given support to raise funds for this important cause and highlight everyone’s need to stay fit. We especially appreciate our patient residents who cheerfully tolerate the brief street closures,” she said.

Streets along the racecourse will be closed from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on race day. The PTAs are working closely with El Segundo Police Department to minimize any inconvenience to the community. PTA volunteers will be posted at key points along the 5K race course to ensure the safety of race participants and assist drivers with alternative routes.

The race route for the 5K Run for Education snakes past all four public schools in the El Segundo Unified School District. The starting line will be in front of El Segundo High School, 640 Main St, just south of Oak Avenue on the east side of Main Street, leaving the southbound lanes open to vehicles. The hilly course will take runners south on Main Street, east on Pine Avenue, south on Center Street, east on Grand Avenue, north on Kansas, west on Mariposa, north on Center, west on Walnut Avenue, south on Maryland, west on Maple, south on Eucalyptus, west on Oak, and south to the finish line on Main Street.

The Kids’ Fun Run will start and finish in front the High School. Fun Run participants will receive a toy generously donated by Mattel. All registered runners for either race will receive race T-shirts. 5th grade and under 5K finishers will receive a medal. There will be trophies for the 5K male and female overall winners as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals for 16 age and gender categories. Individual can register or make contributions on-line at:

NOTE: The Run for Education 5K presents an excellent photo opportunity, especially just after the race begins when a sea of runners charge up hill heading south on Main Street.
