[USPRwire, Tue Mar 20 2007] With Identity Theft continuing to grow at an alarming rate and with over 100,000,000 records containing sensitive personal information at risk due to security breaches since January 2005, wouldn’t it make sense to think about the distribution of personal information before enacting a new law?

Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005. This law federalizes and standardizes driver’s licenses in all 50 states. If Real ID becomes the standard for driver’s licenses nationwide, it will worsen the problem of identity theft and create new opportunities for the thieves. The law requires DMVs to store scanned copies of birth certificates, Social Security cards and other possible documents. It creates a national linked database allowing millions of employees at all levels of government across the nation to access millions of personal data records. It also mandates a nationally standardized “machine readable zone” that will allow bars, merchants and other private parties to scan personal data off licenses with ease, therefore putting all this sensitive personal data into a greater circulation. Unfortunately, we all realize that these Real IDs will be counterfeited as other cards have been and made to look realistic, we will all be at a greater risk of identity theft.

The FTC states that recovery can take almost 500 hours and as much as $3000.00. It further states that 41% of ID Theft victims are still dealing with the problem two years later. This is a problem that when it affects you, no one can tell you who to turn to for recovery help.

Recovering from Identity Theft is now easier when you are connected with the right services. Whereas, most companies that provide assistance to identity theft victims or recovery programs do not address the inevitable, The Recovery Process.
