[USPRwire, Wed May 24 2006] BitDefender, an award-winning provider of antivirus software and data security solutions, today announced that AV-Test, an independent antivirus testing company, reported that BitDefender provides accurate 100% detection of the Ginwui Trojan, a dangerous piece of malware which uses a previously-unknown and as yet unpatched Microsoft Word vulnerability to spread. AV-Test notes that unlike BitDefender, most commercial software antivirus programs either miss some variants of the trojan or fail to detect it entirely.
The Ginwui trojan has caused some commotion since it was first used in a targeted attack against at least one major American corporation last week. Because the attack seemed to originate from China, speculation is rife as to its motives and originators.
"The trojan is rather unusual in that it uses a previously-unreported vulnerability to infect target computers. The vulnerability it uses is not of the obvious kind. I wouldn't dare speculate more at this time, but I doubt it has been created as an idle pastime," stated Viorel Canja, Head of the BitDefender Antivirus Lab.
BitDefender is able to detect Ginwui through the company’s B-HAVE heuristics engine. Separating itself from the majority of other antivirus vendors either not using heuristics or only using heuristics in a limited capacity, BitDefender’s B-HAVE is the only heuristics engine to function at both the server and desktop level.
"Further testing by AV-Test has proven that BitDefender provides protection against all existing and future threats which exploit this vulnerability. This is achieved through use of the B-Have proprietary heuristic detection technology, which is rather important, as Microsoft has not yet released a patch against this vulnerability," concluded Canja.
