Thompson & Knight Foundation Announces Dallas ISD Arts Scholarship Program

$20,000 Award to Arts Magnet Students

[USPRwire, Sun Oct 04 2009] To further celebrate the opening of the landmark AT&T Performing Arts Center, the Thompson & Knight Foundation has announced a commitment to fund $20,000 in academic scholarships to four senior students of the Booker T. Washington High School for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Individual scholarships in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded to a graduating senior from each of the school’s cluster courses of Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts. The nationally renowned, 700-student “Arts Magnet” for the Dallas Independent School District is located directly across from Thompson & Knight’s offices in the Dallas Arts District.

The Firm will also host a special event to celebrate the opening of the latest facilities in the Dallas Arts District with trustees of Dallas arts organizations, civic leaders, and other guests on Thursday, October 15. Arts Magnet students will perform at the event in the Firm’s offices, which offer a panoramic view of the 68-acre, multi-venue neighborhood in the heart of the city.

“The students of Booker T. Washington exemplify the spirit of the Dallas Arts District,” said David Rosenberg, Chair of the Thompson & Knight Foundation. “Our Firm believes this support of academic achievement within the Arts Magnet and the Dallas ISD is a fulfilling and appropriate way to mark this latest chapter in the life of the Dallas cultural and educational community.”

Representatives of Thompson & Knight will serve on a scholarship selection committee with faculty members and administrators of the school and the Dallas ISD, which will manage the internal communication and student application process for the program.

“Through its Foundation, Thompson & Knight is making an investment in Dallas ISD students, and it is really appreciated,” said Michael Hinojosa, Superintendent of Schools. “This kind of investment will pay off when these students graduate from college and return to Dallas to add their talents to the city’s workforce.”

In the summer of 2008, Thompson & Knight completed the Firm’s relocation of its Dallas office to 180,000 square feet on six floors in One Arts Plaza, located at the eastern end of the Dallas Arts District. For the past 100 years, attorneys of the Firm have held numerous leadership positions for Dallas civic and cultural organizations.
